Douglas MacArthur. In 1930 he was named the army’s Chief of Staff but his reputation took a hit when he lead troops against the ‘bonus army’ of vets in Washington in 1932. MacArthur was back in the Philippines when WWII broke out and many of hi forces were destroyed in attacks on the Philippines the day after Pearl harbour.

In November 1950, Chinese troops intervened on the side of North Korea and thoroughly destroyed three divisions of American forces between the Chosin Reservoir and Hungnam, the worst defeat American forces had seen since the Battle of Bataan during World War II.
Douglas MacArthur died in Washington, D.C., on April 5, 1964, at the age of 84. He was honored with a state funeral and was buried in the Douglas MacArthur Memorial in Norfolk, Virginia.
Douglas MacArthur: His Son Disappears. I have to admit that the title of this piece is a bit of a misnomer as General Douglas MacArthur’s son Arthur did indeed “disappear” shortly after his father’s death, but it was a self imposed exile and not something sinister.
