Founded in 1995 in memory of spirits of civil uprising of the 1980 repression of the Gwangju Democratization Movement, the Gwangju Biennale in South Korea is Asia’s oldest biennial of contemporary art.
The Gwangju Design Biennale, a worldly-recognized design festival, aims to forecast the evolutionary direction of design in regards to shaping the future and resolving various problems in life. Experts from domestic and foreign universities and famous designers participate to celebrate design and to share innovative ideas through exhibitions, talks, seminars, and multiple fringe events.
The 12th edition of the Gwangju Biennale opens September 7, 2018, and will run through November 11.
The 12th Gwangju Biennale’s Imagined Borders is a guiding concept that responds to the current times of change and uncertainty by recognizing the limits of grand narratives, singular authorship and the necessity to return to the complexities of multiple voices and perspectives. Seven exhibitions
The Gwangju Biennale has a history of engaging with the city, and its transformations, and of having hosted 1414 artists and over 7 million visitors in a period of nearly 23 years. From this perspective, a return to the theme of that first edition of the Biennale could provide an opportunity to reflect on its history while exploring what borders might mean today.
2018 Gwangju Biennale Exhibition. Main Exhibition. The 12th Gwangju Biennale will see 165 artists from 43 different countries participate in a series of seven exhibitions and the GB Commission exploring the political, cultural, physical and emotional concepts of borders in today’s global community.
Gwangju City and the Gwangju Design Center (GDC) Foundation will host the Gwangju Design Biennale 2017 under the theme of “FUTURES” from September 8 to October 23, 2017 (46 days) at the Gwangju Biennale Exhibition halls, Gwangju Museum of Art and the Asia Culture Center (ACC).
